(Sunday, June 22, 1941, 3:15 a.m. local time) — Nazi Germany today began bombing major cities in Soviet-occupied Poland, launching Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. More than three million Germans attacked in three parallel offensives as Hitler went to war on a second front. Nineteen panzer divisions, 3,000 tanks, 2,500 aircraft, and 7,000 artillery pieces poured across a 4,000-mile front in the most powerful invasion force in history. (Thursday, June 22, 1961) — The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best), an English rock band formed in Liverpool, today begin their first professional studio recording sessions (which continue through tomorrow, Friday, June 23) at Friedrich Ebert Halle in Hamburg, West Germany, backing Tony Sheridan on four tracks, including My Bonnie as The Beat Brothers.
