(Sunday, June 22, 1941, 3:15 a.m. local time) — Nazi Germany today began bombing major cities in Soviet-occupied Poland, launching Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. More than three million Germans attacked in three parallel offensives as Hitler went to war on a second front. Nineteen panzer divisions, 3,000 tanks, 2,500 aircraft, and 7,000 artillery pieces poured across a 4,000-mile front in the most powerful invasion force in history.
