Former President James Monroe, 73, dies in New York City

(Monday, Jul 4, 1831, 3:15 p.m. ET)James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States (1817-1825), died today (55 years after the U.S. Declaration of Independence) in New York City at age 73.  Cause of death was likely tuberculosis.
