9/11: WTC North Tower Plane Crash (8:46 a.m. EDT)
(Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 8:46:26 a.m. EDT) — American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767-223ER bound for Los Angeles, crashed this morning at roughly 466 mph into the north face of the North Tower (1 WTC) of the World Trade Center, between floors 93 and 99, in Lower Manhattan, New York City.
All 92 people aboard Flight 11 were killed, including 76 passengers, 11 crew members and 5 hijackers.
The plane, which took off from Boston’s Logan International Airport at 7:59 a.m., was taken over by five hijackers (at 8:14 a.m.) in a series of four coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda on the United States, collectively known as the September 11 attacks.
