Germans torpoedo USS Kearny, 11 Americans killed 70 years ago today (1941)

(Friday, October 17, 1941, 51 days before the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor) — USS Kearny (DD 432) was torpedoed today on her starboard side by a German U-boat while on patrol off Greenland but did not sink.

The crew confined flooding to the forward fire room, enabling the ship to get out of the danger zone with power from the aft engine and fire room.

Eleven men were killed and 22 others were injured in the explosion, which occurred before the U.S. entered World War II.
