Video: FDR's speech (at 2:11)
(Monday, October 27, 1941, 10 p.m. ET, 41 days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor) — President Franklin D. Roosevelt said tonight that the United States has taken its battle stations. America, he said, “has been attacked.”
In a bristling, breathtaking Navy Day speech, the president declared “the shooting has started” and the U.S. Navy “is ready for action.” Indeed, he said, units of the Navy in the American patrol “are in action.”
“America has been attacked,” Roosevelt solemnly told the country, and that “history has recorded who fired the first shot.”
