Muskie breaks down while attacking newspaper publisher 40 years ago today (1972)

(Saturday, February 26, 1992) — Standing in a driving snowfall at the doorsteps of the Manchester Union Leader, Senator Edmund S. Muskie, the favorite for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972, appeared to break down today while attacking the paper’s publisher as a “gutless coward” for publishing the so-called Canuck letter (part of the Nixon dirty tricks campaign) and an article critical of his wife.

‘How Green Was My Valley’ wins Best Picture at 14th Academy Awards 70 years ago today (1942)

(Thursday, February 26, 1942)How Green Was My Valley, the story of Welsh coalminers in changing times, was named Best Picture of 1941 (beating out Citizen Kane) tonight at the 14th Academy Awards at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The film’s director, John Ford, also won for Best Director.

Gary Cooper (Sergeant York) won Best Actor while Joan Fontaine (Suspicion) won Best Actress.
