‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ premieres at Cannes 30 years ago today (1982)

(Wednesday, May 26, 1982)E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, a science fiction film about a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed “E.T.”, who is stranded on Earth, premiered today at the Cannes Film Festival (it would open in U.S. theaters on June 11, 1982).

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, and Peter Coyote.

(Saturday, May 26, 1962)Stranger on the Shore by Mr. Acker Bilk peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart for one week. It was the first British recording to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (Vera Lynn’s “Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart” had reached #1 in 1952, on the shorter “Best Sellers In Stores” survey).
