(Saturday, June 27, 1942, during Operation Pastorius, part of World War II) — The FBI announced tonight the arrests of eight Nazi saboteurs, highly trained by direction of the German High Command at a special school for sabotage near Berlin, who had been put ashore in Florida and Long Island, New York.

Carrying cases of powerful explosives and nearly $150,000 in cash, the two groups of saboteurs landed with orders to blow up certain key plants and to cause panics in large cities.

All were tried and sentenced to death; six were executed while two were spared for having turned themselves in and cooperating with U.S. authorities.
