‘Sounder’ opens in New York City 40 years ago today (1972)

(Sunday, September 24, 1972)Sounder, a drama film about the son of a family of black sharecroppers who comes of age in the Depression-era South after his father is imprisoned for stealing food, opened today at the Plaza and New Embassy theaters in New York City.

Directed by Martin Ritt, the film stars Cicely Tyson, Paul Winfield, Kevin Hooks, Carmen Mathews, Taj Mahal, Eric Hooks and Janet MacLachlan.

(Saturday, September 24, 1932) — Leaders of the caste Hindus and the untouchables, who have been striving for three days to draft a compromise plan on the electoral question and end the death fast of Mahatma Gandhi, the pre-eminent political and ideological leader of India during the Indian independence movement, reached an agreement today with the Poona Pact at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune (now in Maharashtra), India.
