U.S. sets off first hydrogen bomb 60 years ago this hour (1952)

(Friday, October 31, 1952, 2:15 p.m. EST/Saturday, November 1, 1952, 7:15 a.m. local time ) — The United States today exploded the first hydrogen bomb, code-named “Ivy Mike,” at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It produced a yield estimated in the range of 10.4–12 megatons of TNT.
