‘King Kong’ opens in New York City 80 years ago today (1933)

(Thursday, March 2, 1933)King Kong, a monster/adventure film about a gigantic island-dwelling ape creature called Kong who dies in an attempt to possess a beautiful young woman, opened today at the 6,200-seat Radio City Music Hall in New York City and the 3,700-seat RKO Roxy across the street.

Directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, the film starred Fay Wray, Bruce Cabot and Robert Armstrong.
