Roberta Flack wins top Grammy awards 40 years ago this hour (1973)

(Saturday, March 3, 1973, 9:00 p.m. CST) — Robert Flack won the top two awards at the 15th Grammy Awards at Tennessee Theater in Nashville tonight, including Song of the Year (Ewan MacColl, songwriter) and Record of the Year (Joel Dorn, producer) for her ballad “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”

The third most coveted award, Album of the Year (Phil Spector, producer), went to The Concert For Bangla Desh, a benefit performed live in Madison Garden in New York City on Aug. 1 1971, by former Beatle George Harrison and an array of rock and soul performers, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Ravi Shankar, former Beatle Ringo Starr and Klaus Voormann.

Best New Artist was awarded to the versatile three-man rock group America, whose biggest single of the past year was “A Horse With No Name.”
