Paul McCartney performs first time in Moscow 10 years ago this hour (2003)

(Saturday, May 24, 2003, 8:30 p.m. MSK) — Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney performed tonight at Red Square in Moscow, Russia, the 19th stop and 30th performance of his Back in the World tour.

In the audience was former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev who met with McCartney before the concert. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was not expected to attend the concert, made an entrance halfway during “Calico Skies.”

Earlier in the day, McCartney arrived in Moscow and was hosted by Putin, who gave him a personal tour of the Kremlin. McCartney also held a news conference at the concert venue.
