(Tuesday, November 23, 1943, 1:30 p.m. GILT; during the Battle of Tarawa (Operation Galvanic) part of the Pacific War during World War II) — The Tarawa and Makin atolls fell to American forces today, concluding the Battle of Tarawa. Nearly 6,400 Japanese, Koreans, and Americans died in four days of fighting, mostly on and around the small island of Betio.

(Friday, November 22, 1963, 7:35 p.m. EST) — The autopsy of President John F. Kennedy was performed tonight at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. 277 X-rays and photographs were taken preliminarily and the pathological examination began at about 8 p.m.

After the autopsy was concluded at approximately 11 p.m., the president’s body was prepared for burial. This was finished at approximately 4 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, 1963.

(Friday, November 22, 1963, 2:04 p.m. CST) — The body of U.S. President John F. Kennedy was removed from Parkland Hospital today into a waiting hearse headed for Air Force One at Love Field in Dallas for transport back to Washington.

Although Texas law mandates an autopsy must be performed within the state, the Secret Service, Kennedy’s personnel and District Attorney Henry Wade overrule an objection of Medical Examiner Dr. Earl F. Rose.

(Friday, November 22, 1963, 1:55 p.m. CST) — Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested this afternoon after a struggle in the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff. An employee of the book depository from where the fatal shots were fired at President Kennedy 85 minutes before, Oswald was wanted in the fatal shooting of police officer J.D. Tippit just 40 minutes before at the corner of 10th Street and Patton Avenue.
