‘From Here to Eternity’ wins Best Motion Picture at 26th Academy Awards 60 years ago this hour (Mar 25 1954)

(Thursday, March 25, 1954, 8:00 p.m. PST)From Here to Eternity, a drama film about a British family that survives war and changing times, won three Oscars tonight at the 26th Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture and Fred Zinnemann for Best Director.

William Holden won Best Actor for Stalag 17 and Audrey Hepburn won Best Actress for Roman Holiday.

The ceremonies were held at RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, California, and NBC Century Theatre in New York City with Donald O’Connor (Los Angeles) and Fredric March (New York City) as hosts.
