(Monday, May 17, 1954) — The U.S. Supreme Court, in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, unanimously struck down racially segregated public schools, ruling today that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal” and thereby launching the African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68).
