(Wednesday, July 15, 1964, 10:13 p.m. PDT) — Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona, the champion of a new American conservatism, was nominated for president tonight by the 1964 Republican National Convention meeting at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California.

Goldwater defeated Gov. William W. Scranton of Pennsylvania 883-214 on the first ballot. At the conclusion of the ballot Scranton appeared on the platform to move for the unanimous nomination of Goldwater. The convention then adopted by acclamation a resolution making it so.

Goldwater would accept the nomination Thursday, after his choice for vice president, Rep. William E. Miller of New York, was duly nominated.
