House panel votes 27-11 to recommend impeachment of President Nixon 40 years ago this hour (July 27 1974)

(Saturday, July 27, 1974, 7:05 p.m. EDT; during the Watergate scandal) — The House Judiciary Committee voted 27-11 tonight to adopt the first of three articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon, charging he had personally engaged in a course of conduct designed to obstruct justice in the Watergate case.

In the days that followed, the Committee also adopted articles accusing Nixon of abuse of power and contempt of Congress.

Teamsters president Hoffa convicted on use of funds 50 years ago today (July 26 1964)

Hoffa, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (who is appealing a Chattanooga federal court conviction for jury tampering), guilty of mail and wire fraud and conspiracy today in the use of his union’s pension fund; six co-defendants were found guilty of conspiracy.
