(Thursday, August 27, 1964) — Robert F. Kennedy stood for 13 minutes on the podium of the 1964 Democratic National Convention tonight, unable to speak because of the applause surging up from the delegates below him.

The attorney general had come to the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to introduce a memorial film about his older brother, President John F. Kennedy, assassinated in Dallas nine months ago (click here to listen to audio of the complete speech).
