Snake River Canyon defies daredevil Evel Knievel 40 years ago this hour (Sep 8 1974)

(Sunday, September 8, 1974, 3:36 p.m. MDT) — With much media fanfare, daredevil Evel Knievel tried and failed to leap the mile-wide chasm of the Snake River Canyon today on his specially engineered rocket motorcycle.

His drogue parachute malfunctioned and opened on take-off. Evel and his contraption floated to the bottom of the canyon, landing on the riverbank directly below his launch ramp.

(Wednesday, September 8, 2004)Downfall, a German war film depicting the final ten days of Adolf Hitler’s reign over Nazi Germany in 1945, premiered today in Munich, Germany.

Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the film starred Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Maria Lara, Ulrich Matthes, Corinna Harfouch, Juliane Köhler and Thomas Kretschmann.

In spite of an awful storm, 5 000 fans are waiting for them at the airport, most of them girls, along with 120 officers from the RCMP.
