(Monday, October 23, 1944, 5:24 a.m. local time; during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, part of the Pacific Theatre of World War II) — The Battle of Leyte Gulf, generally considered to be the largest naval battle of World War II and, by some criteria, possibly the largest naval battle in history, began today in waters near the Philippine islands of Leyte, Samar and Luzon between combined U.S. and Australian forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy.
