(Wednesday, October 31, 1984, 9:20 a.m. IST) — Indira Gandhi, the 4th Prime Minister of India, was assassinated today at her Safdarjung Road, New Delhi residence, shot by two of her bodyguards (shot at 9:20 a.m.; declared dead at 2:20 p.m.) in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, the Indian army’s June 1984 assault on the Golden Temple in Amritsar which left the temple heavily damaged.
