(Tuesday, November 7, 1944, during the 1944 presidential campaign) — Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York was elected to an unprecedented fourth term today, soundly defeating Republican challenger New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey.

Roosevelt and his running mate, Sen. Harry S. Truman of Missouri, received 53.4% of the national popular vote. Dewey and his running mate, Governor John W. Bricker of Ohio, received 45.9%.

The 1944 popular vote results, set in the backdrop of World War II, translated into a decisive Electoral College victory of 432-99 for Roosevelt-Truman, who would be sworn in to a four-year term on January 20, 1945.
