President Roosevelt elected to second term over Alton Parker 110 years ago today (Nov 8 1904)

(Tuesday, November 8, 1904, during the 1904 presidential campaign) — Republican President Theodore Roosevelt of New York, who had succeeded to the presidency upon the assassination of William McKinley in September 1901, was elected to a full term of his own today, soundly defeating Democratic challenger Chief Judge Alton B. Parker of New York.

Roosevelt and his running mate, Senator Charles W. Fairbanks of Indiana, received 56.4% of the national popular vote. Parker and his running mate, former Senator Henry G. Davis of West Virginia, received 37.6%.

The 1904 popular vote results translated into a decisive Electoral College victory of 336-140 for Roosevelt-Fairbanks, who would be sworn in to a four-year term on March 4, 1905.
