(Thursday, June 6, 1985) — Authorities in Brazil today exhumed a body later identified as the remains of Dr. Josef Mengele, the notorious “Angel of Death” of the Nazi Holocaust.

A German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and physician in Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, Mengele was notorious for the selection of victims to be killed in the gas chambers and for performing unscientific and often deadly human experiments on prisoners.

Having eluded capture, Mengele escaped to Argentina in July 1949 and died on Feb. 7, 1979, at age 67, after suffering a stroke while swimming in the coastal resort of Bertioga.
