Former Klansman guilty of manslaughter in 1964 deaths 10 years ago today (June 21 2005)

(Tuesday, June 21, 2005) — Forty-one years to the day after three civil rights workers (Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney) were beaten and shot to death in Mississippi, Edgar Ray Killen, an 80-year-old former Ku Klux Klansman, was found guilty today of manslaughter.

Killen was sentenced on June 23, 2005, to 60 years in prison.

(Friday, June 21, 1985)Cocoon, a science fiction film about a group of elderly people are rejuvenated by aliens after swimming in a pool, was released today in U.S. theaters.

Directed by Ron Howard, the film starred Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley, Hume Cronyn, Brian Dennehy, Jack Gilford, Steve Guttenberg, Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy, Gwen Verdon, Herta Ware and Tahnee Welch.

(Friday, June 22, 1945, 4:00 a.m. JST; during the Battle of Okinawa, part of the Pacific Theatre of World War II) — The 82-day Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest in the Pacific, ended today when Japanese Lieutenant General Mitsuru Ushijima, the commander of Okinawa’s defense, committed suicide with a number of Japanese officers and troops rather than surrender to the Allies.
