‘The Phantom of the Opera’ premieres in New York City 90 years ago tonight (Sep 6 1925)

(Sunday, September 6, 1925, evening EDT)The Phantom of the Opera, a silent horror film about a hideously deformed man who haunts the sewers beneath the Paris Opera, premiered tonight at the Astor Theatre in New York City.

Directed by Rupert Julian, the film starred Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe and Gibson Gowland.

Truman delivered a special message to Congress today, proposing a 21-point program for a peace time economy, including an increase in the minimum wage, aid for housing and a bill for the first pre-paid medical insurance in the nation’s history. But a coalition of Republicans and conservative southern Democrats would refuse him everything.
