(Sunday, September 22, 1985, 10:00 a.m.-midnight CDT) — The first Farm Aid, a concert staged to raise money for family farmers in the United States, was held today at University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois, featuring rock and country music artists like John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and Neil Young.

Attended by 80,000 people, the event raised over $9 million for America’s family farmers.
