(Friday, December 12, 1975, 10:05 a.m. PST) — Sara Jane Moore asked a federal court in San Francisco today to allow her to plead guilty to trying to kill President Gerald R. Ford on Sept. 22, 1975.

After the judge ruled Moore competent to change her plea, she was sentenced to life.

Moore was released on parole on New Year’s Eve 2007 after serving 32 years behind bars.

Moore, 45, fired a single shot from a .38 caliber revolver at Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, but a civilian bystander deflected the gun just as it went off and Ford was not hit.

Moore’s assassination attempt took place just 17 days after Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme’s attempted attempted to kill Ford in Sacramento, California.
