(Monday, April 14, 1986, 7:00 p.m. EST/Tuesday, April 15, 1986, 2:00 a.m. EEST) — The U.S. conducted a series of air strikes today against what the White House called “terrorist centers” and military bases in Libya in response to the bombing of a discotheque in Berlin on April 5.

Libya said 37 people, mostly civilians, were killed.

President Ronald Reagan, in a nationally broadcast speech (April 14, 1986, at 9:00 p.m. EST), said the American forces had “succeeded” in their mission of retaliating against Libya for what he termed the “reign of terror” waged by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, the Libyan leader, against the United States.
