Tornado kills 17 in Topeka, Kansas 50 years ago this hour (June 8 1966)

(Wednesday, June 8, 1966, 6:55 p.m. CDT) — The strongest of a series of tornadoes (registering as an “F5” on the Fujita scale) struck the Topeka, Kansas, area today, killing 17 people.

Hundreds more were injured, thousands of homes damaged or destroyed, and the campus of Washburn University suffered catastrophic damage.
