(Wednesday, July 14, 1976, 11:43 p.m. EDT) — Former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia was nominated president tonight at the 1976 Democratic National Convention meeting at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Carter defeated Representative Morris Udall of Arizona on the first ballot 2,239 to 300 votes.

The convention would nominate Carter’s running mate the following day to oppose the Republican ticket of President Gerald R. Ford and Senator Bob Dole (nominated in Aug. 1976) in the United States presidential election, 1976.
