(Thursday, July 14, 1966, early morning CDT) — Drifter Richard Speck today forced his way into a nurses’ dormitory that served the nearby South Chicago Community Hospital, and tied up, and then strangled eight of the nine student nurses who lived there, including three who arrived while the crime was in progress.

The eight victims, ranging in age from 20 to 24, were Pamela Wilkening; Suzanne Farris; Mary Ann Jordan; Nina Jo Schmale; Valentina Pasion; Merlita Gargullo; Patricia Matusek; and Gloria Jean Davy.

The lone survivor in the building, Corazon Amurao, escaped notice by hiding under a bed, waited for several hours after Speck had left, and climbed out on a ledge hours later to scream for help.

Speck was convicted of the mass killing and condemned to death, but had his sentence reduced to life in prison, where he died in 1991.
