(Tuesday, July 27, 1976, at approximately 2:30 p.m. EDT) –Former Beatle John Lennon, 35, won a four-year-battle with U.S. immigration authorities today and will be allowed to remain in the U.S. as a permanent resident alien and to apply for U.S. citizenship in five years.

Lennon’s original resident-alien application was rejected by an immigration judge because of his conviction in England in 1968 for possession of marijuana, but some Lennon supporters felt then that his anti-Vietnam War activities had prompted government plans to department him.
