Datebook republishes John Lennon’s ‘Jesus’ comments 50 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (July 29 1966)

(Friday, July 29, 1966) — The American teen magazine Datebook today republished John Lennon’s remarks that “The Beatles are more popular than Jesus,” which had first appeared in England on March 4, 1966, in an interview for the Evening Standard newspaper by journalist Maureen Cleave.

The republication of the Lennon quote in Datebook would set off a chain of events that would culminate in public bonfires of The Beatles’ records and a public backlash that at times made the group fearful for their lives,

(Thursday, July 29, 1976, 1:10 a.m. EDT) — The first of eight shootings ascribed to the serial killer known as “Son of Sam” (or the “.44 Caliber Killer”) occurred early this morning in the Pelham Bay area of the Bronx, New York City’s northernmost borough, as a gunman killed 18-year-old Donna Lauria and wounded her friend, 19-year-old Jody Valenti, as the pair sat in Valenti’s Oldsmobile.
