(Sunday, August 9, 1936) — African-American athlete Jesse Owens picked up his fourth gold medal today at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, as the U.S. team won the men’s 4 × 100 metres relay race in record time.

Owens having already won three gold medals, setting world records in the 100 and 200-meter sprints and the long jump, smashed Adolf Hitler’s plan to use the 1936 games as a showcase for Aryan superiority.
