(Sunday, August 9, 1936) — Sohn Kee-chung became the first medal-winning Korean Olympian today when he won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a member of the Japanese delegation as Korea was part of the Japanese Empire at the time.
