(Sunday, September 9, 1956, 8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) — Elvis Presley debuted tonight’s live edition of the CBS-TV variety show The Ed Sullivan Show, performing remotely from a CBS studio in Hollywood, where the singer was filming his first motion picture.

Actor Charles Laughton served as substitute host on this night because Sullivan was recuperating from an auto accident.
