(Friday, October 21, 1966, 9:15 a.m. BST) — 116 children and 28 adults were killed this morning when an avalanche of two million tons of rain-soaked coal waste slipped 500 feet down a mountainside and engulfed a school and some 20 houses in Aberfan, Wales.
