(Monday, March 30, 1987, 6:00-9:19 p.m. PST)Platoon, an American war film about a rookie soldier who struggles under the unbearable conditions of a horrible war, won four Oscars tonight at the 59th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Oliver Stone for Best Director.

Paul Newman won Best Actor for The Color of Money and Marlee Matlin won Best Actress for Children of a Lesser God. And both supporting acting awards went to Hannah and Her Sisters (Michael Caine and Dianne Wiest).

Ceremonies were held at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles with Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan acting as co-hosts.
