(Monday, March 24, 1997, 6:00 p.m.-9:34 p.m. PST)The English Patient, a British-American romantic drama film about a man dying from third-degree burns who remembers a tragic wartime romance, won nine Oscars tonight at the 69th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Anthony Minghella) and Best Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche).

Geoffrey Rush won Best Actor for Shine, Frances McDormand won Best Actress for Fargo and Cuba Gooding Jr. won Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire.

Ceremonies were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with with Billy Crystal as host.
