(Thursday, May 19, 1977, 5:33 p.m. EDT) — In what became known as the “Girl in the Box” case, 20-year-old Colleen Stan, hitchhiking from her home in Eugene, Oregon, to a friend’s home in northern California, where she was heading to attend a birthday party, was abducted today by a couple she’d accepted a ride from and imprisoned as a sex slave for the next seven years.
