(Saturday, July 6, 1957, late afternoon BST) — John Lennon, 16, first met Paul McCartney, 15, today when Lennon’s band, the Quarrymen skiffle group, performed at the garden fete of St. Peter’s Church in Woolton, Liverpool.

Remarkably, the Quarrymen’s evening set was recorded by an audience member, Bob Molyneux, on his portable Grundig reel-to-reel tape recorder.

Recordings of the band performing Lonnie Donegan’s “Puttin’ On The Style” and Elvis Presley’s “Baby, Let’s Play House” were recovered in 1994.
