(Wednesday, August 10, 1977, sometime after 10:00 p.m. EDT) — David Berkowitz, a 24-year-old postal employee said by the police to be the “Son of Sam,” the .44-caliber killer who took the lives of six young people and wounded seven others in a year-long reign of terror in New York City, was taken into custody late tonight in front of his Yonkers apartment building, just north of the city. (Friday, August 10, 1917, early afternoon; during World War I) — Herbert Hoover was named formally as the first director of the U.S. Food Administration today by President Woodrow Wilson, under authority invested in him by Congress, and immediately served notice on speculators and profiteers that the time of reckoning had come for those who would not cooperate in the efforts of the government to obtain lower prices for the consumer and help the allies of America in the war against Germany.
