(Thursday, August 18, 1977, 2:00 p.m. CDT) — Private funeral services for rock music icon Elvis Presley were today at his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee.

Approximately 80,000 people lined the processional route to Forest Hill Cemetery, where Presley was buried (at 4:30 p.m. CDT) next to his mother, who had died in 1958.

Presley, 42, died Aug. 16, 1977, of a heart attack following many years of prescription drug abuse.

Several hours before Presley’s funeral services began (at 4:00 a.m. CDT), a car plowed into a group of fans outside the gates at Graceland, killing two teenage girls and critically injuring a third.

The driver was charged with drunk driving and two counts of second-degree murder.
