(Tuesday, August 23, 1927, 12:11-12:26 a.m. EDT) — Amid protests, Italian-born anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti died in the electric chair early this morning at Charlestown State Prison in Boston for the murders of two men during a 1920 robbery.

Sacco and Vanzetti were exonerated in 1977 by Gov. Michael S. Dukakis of Massachusetts.
