(Monday, November 14, 1977, CBS Evening News aired at 7:00 p.m. EST in New York; during the Arab–Israeli conflict) — President Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt said today that he was prepared to address the Israeli Parliament within the next week once he had received a formal invitation from Prime Minister Menahem Begin of Israel.

Begin, when informed of Sadat’s comments, announced that he would ask the United States to convey a formal invitation to the Egyptian leader on his behalf.

As a result of the remarks by the Egyptian and Israeli leaders — both interviewed on CBS television — the way seemed to clear for a visit by Sad to Jerusalem, the first public trip by any Arab leader to Israel since its founding in 1948.
