(Monday, December 13, 1937; during the Second Sino-Japanese War) — The six-week Nanking Massacre, an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against war prisoners, soldiers and citizens of Nanjing (Nanking), then the capital of the Republic of China, began today, the same day that the Japanese captured Nanjing at the conclusion of the Battle of Nanking.

China maintains as many as 300,000 people were killed, but Japan says the toll was far less.
