(Thursday, December 16, 1937, 1:30 p.m. PST) — Two long-term convicts, Theodore “Ted” Cole and Ralph Roe, took part today in the second documented escape attempt from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, a maximum high-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco.

Although officials were quick to conclude they perished in the attempt, their remains were never found and their fate remains unknown, making the incident the first to shatter Alcatraz’s reputation as an “escape-proof” prison.
